      If possible you should not make the same hand and arm movements over and over when you sense a pain during movement. If that’s not an option for you, find yourself a suitable brace while you take breaks as often as you can. Other tips to consider:

      Learn to use your shoulder and upper arm muscles to take the strain off your elbow.Try as much as possible not to go beyond the middle of your range of motion by avoid bending or straightening your arm all the way.Do a warm up and stretch before sports and other activities where you repeat the same motions with your arm.

    I am no longer young, do not play tennis. But I had to work hard and my elbow joints ache from time to time.

  5. Great article – that manages to bring up more than a few painful memories. I actually managed to pick up tennis elbow from playing in a Sunday League football team (or soccer, depending where you are in the world!). 

    Our keeper was out for 5 months and considering I was over six foot three – I stepped in. The repetitive action of hurling the ball out as far as I could for counter attacks brought on the condition, and it kept on coming back (every time I thought I was fine to exercise again!). 

    I’m wondering how durable these pads are – would they stand up to a contact sport like football?

  6. You make a very valid point regarding the fit of the brace, making sure it is interchangeable saves on outlay and means you are well prepared for either left or right hand brace.

    I also like the idea of velcro straps as this gives you the adjustment factor needed to give a comfortable fit.  The worst thing you want to do is have the brace fitting too tightly.

    Reading about the fact that there is an element of Copper in the braces was a pleasant surprise knowing that there is an element taking care of the anti-bacterial factor.

You’ve made a very insightful point but what you need to understand is that, just as we take pain killers for to give us relief so are the braces, to help relieve the muscles of excessive pressure posed on them. In effect it helps the muscles to maintain its normal mobility rather than stopping it.

      Once you stop using the brace, it means the pressure on the muscle has been restored to normal and that it can support your movement without any further pain.

    I don’t play tennis anymore, but I know a friend who does and he always complains about his elbow, and he has pain afterwards.

    When I mentioned about braces he said it was hard to find it.

    Now seeing your post, I will share it with him and no way he can say it is hard to find it.

  8. Hi Derrick, thank you so much for the post. It’s a long time I played tennis, but I play a lot of other sports daily and i feel some pain in my elbows. I’m still trying to find the best elbow pad for me, and your article it’s amazing, because it gives me a lot of information about different types of elbow pads. I just need to think what is the best for me, because i use a lot my elbows in my sports activities in a daily basis. I do need something light and that does some compression, i think the Kunto Fitness could be the one i need, because is also easy to clean, do you think that it will be a good purchase for me?     Any sort of sports injury is a complete hassle and as someone who is very active sports wise, I have often at times need additional support or braces during times of injury. There are so many products on the market today, some of them are really necessary however some of them look great but have poor functionality.

    Im impressed with the detail you have gone into with the article to educate people on the points that should be considered when purchasing injury assistance equipment as unless you have experience in it, it can be difficult to decide what is needed.

    Thanks for assisting us sportsmen (and women) in addressing a real need and providing honest support to finding a suitable product.

    I was wondering… you said you never had a tennis elbow yourself but knee pains sometimes… do you have any ideas why some people suffer from a tennis elbow and others don’t ? I’d be curious to hear your opinion on that…

      You’re always welcome to my site and thanks for dropping a comment. I think we all in one or the other experience tennis elbow but the degree of it might differ based on our repetitive actions. 

      Tennis elbow results when we put so much stress on our muscles frequently through an unnatural arm movement or position. When that is realized and controlled, you save yourself from it but if you continue in that arm movement or position then you become prone to tennis elbow. I hope it helps?

  11.  Hey Derrick! How are you doing mate? I loved the way you wrote this post as it contains tonnes of information one can utilize to help them with tennis elbow.

    I’ve been playing tennis for 6 years and I still play the sports. In the month of January, I was diagnosed of tennis elbow just because my coach changed the way I hit my forehand. This caused a lot of pain in my hand and I was using something similar to Tomight. Any of these things work and it’s good that you’ve mentioned everything.

    I have been lucky enough to practice several sports in my life like tennis, volleyball and soccer.

    I have always used compression sleeves that can fit very well on my elbows, knees and forearms. 

    It’s amazing how these protective elements help our joints. The material with which they are manufactured must be of quality and we must measure our joints well, in order to choose the correct model. 

    Very interesting article that I will consider for my next purchases.

    My husband plays tennis, and after a few hours, his elbow starts to hurt. He went to a physiotherapist and he told him that he needs compression support sleeves. So the one that really seems to be the best for my husband is the number nine on the list. I just would like to know if this suitable for both elbows? Or there is the left and right arms?

Being a fitness specialist I’ve seen plenty of tennis elbow aka lateral epicondylitis in others.  As you stated it’s not just a sports injury either.  I have those kind of joints in arms that actually bend backwards and even at a young age (thankfully, I’ve had to train them straight to avoid injuries.

    Between the repetitive overuse of my arms at harvest time and, then, hyper-extending my elbows unconsciously while I sleep I have been in a lot of pain.

    Thank you for the comprehensive reviews.  I think the Simien compression braces will be my go-to chooice for the day for it’s versatility because, when I’m not outdoors overdoing it physically I’m in front of my computer overdoing it!  

    Do you think one of the neoprene compression sleeves would keep me from hyper-extending accidentally in my sleep as well?
